    Recovery Vision - First Step?

Posted by : Tiffany Tng and Mr Tuan Wee / Posted in : RWS Event 7 / R2R Event 2

What do you think is the first step you can do for your recovery?

Tiffany - For me, the first step is to choose recovery and positivity. If I have no desire to recover, I will always remain unwell. Choosing happiness, recovery and positivity is the first and most important to me, as we all have choices. We can either choose to be happy, or sad.

Mr Tuan - For me, I have to think that I am better and not to let my illness control me. I need to take medicine everyday and not skip medication to keep my illness under control.

Up till now I still do not think I warrant a schizo diagnosis for the so called delusions that other people hate me for the bad things I did under stress...I feel guilt and at the same time anger. Not sure how I can recover from a self perceived character flaw in myself

Continuation from previous post: In the meanwhile, I was not diagnosed properly and hence I was given the wrong medications which affected me in different ways. So I definitely think that getting a proper diagnosis should be the first step even if it means having to go see multiple Drs to confirm the diagnosis.

The first step for me was the diagnosis. I just had to understand what was wrong with me so that I could make the decision to take the next proper action. The reason why I say this is because I actually lost my memory in 2014. And it took me more than a year to actually get a proper diagnosis as to why this happened to me. To be continued...

Can you tell us about how you found your routine and if you have any back up routines in case you're not able to stick to your main routine one day?

    Eddy John Sng(20 Jul, 2018)

Hi Antony, thanks for following up. I used to have a main routine as follows: - Turn in early [10pm-11pm] - Spend last hour/30 mins before sleep relaxing my mind [for me, I read the Bible, pray, sing songs to God] - Wake up early [6am-7am] - Spend 1st hour/30 mins waking up preparing my mind [for me, I read the Bible, pray and commit the day ahead to God] I haven't been able to practice this due to unpredictable work hours for the last couple of years.

the most important Vision on recovery to me shld be making realistic plans tht we can achieve step by step yet simple at the first stage...For me n others we shld first understand our illness , medication side effects , slowly into taking ownership over your condition cos dr n Counsellors or peeps or case manager are not 24hrs , we can get a journal to being with n just write dwn simple things about wen taking medicine wat side effects , any other complications n improvements after meds

Thank you. That's the first step. What do you think their recovery vision should be?

    Gayathri(17 Jul, 2018)

I am always vacillating between dealing with my hurt & trying to be a nicer person despite them. Sometimes, it can hurt real bad but I have to constantly tell myself that I have to move on. There are others who are worse off than me. Learning to find gratitude. This is a constant struggle. - to be continued

Continued from previous post - I am not the nicest person when I am bitter from the hurts. But I have to continually strive to be a better me. I fail sometimes but I always try again. It is a struggle. To focus less on myself. To look beyond me. - anonymous

Anonymous, thank you for sharing your story with us. But I suggest not comparing yourself with others and thinking there are others who have it worse than you. Your fight is yours only and it's uniquely yours. You just have to think of it as waves or clouds which come and go. as long as you don't hang on to them or judge yourself based on the hurt you've been through and your reaction when you get reminded of it. That's the best form of self healing and self love as well as gratitude.

1st step for me is to accept the situation and then seek help actively.

How was it for you to accept the situation? I'm sure it wasn't an easy step to take.

    Nicholas Wong(18 Jul, 2018)

Yes it was not easy at all, especially at the beginning. But equip self with the right knowledge helps a lot. And knowing that it is possible to recovery bring hope. And with hope everything becomes easier.

    Gayathri(18 Jul, 2018)

Yes, Hope is a necessity for people like us. I agree with you.

The hardest thing about recovery for me is to realise that i was worth recovery. so the first step i took was to tell myself that i am worth recovery, that i deserve the help and that i needed it.

I agree with you, Sabrina. It really is difficult to think ourselves worthy of the treatments and recovery when we are feeling hopeless and worthless. Is there anything you did to help yourself accept the the fact that you are worth the recovery?

    sab(18 Jul, 2018)

To surround myself with friends and family who love me, absorbing all their love to wash away all the self-hate. there are people who love me so hey there must be something worthy about me after all. i didn't listen to my illness, i listened to the people around me.

    Gayathri(18 Jul, 2018)

Oh yes, that's so true. if people like us there must be a reason to it, right? I always have self-doubt and even though people compliment me and like me I still find it so hard to believe that there's actually something likeable about me. Maybe it was because of how deep my self-hatred went. But after RWS6, I have started changing for the better. :)

I agree. Try asking this person to elaborate on what's the difference between goal and vision and maybe share an experience with us.

    Good observation Jennie!

    Tiffany(15 Jul, 2018)

    i agree Jennie thank u.... :)

    Gayathri(17 Jul, 2018)

I think more than the Dr liking you, you should like the Dr and if you think the Dr's methods are not helping you then you should talk it out with your Dr or change Dr.

From Ms Karita, a Hypnotherapist: ....what do you think their vision about recovery should be? That it is possible to get well and see the light at the end of the tunnel. No suffering lasts forever. ...first step they should take towards making the vision come true? Believe in themselves and in change for better.
