Life Skills - Where are you in the Resilience Process?

    Posted by : Gayathri S Panicker / Posted in : RWS Event 7 / R2R Event 2

Stage 1: The Illness is a BIG part of The Person

Stage 2: The Illness is a SMALLER part of The Person

Stage 3: The Illness is just ONE part of The Person - there is also Work, Friends, Family & Leisure

Which phase are you at now and what do you think you can do to go to the next phase?

I think stage 2. I take medicine on time and never miss, go for appointments and never miss. To go to stage 3: Joining the RWS 7/RTR 2 group

I am somewhere between Stage 1 & 2. I think to move to Stage 2, I need better self acceptance, learn and apply coping skills, and practice mindfulness

I’m doing a lot to cope with it and it still is a significant , but not a major actor in my life. I try bandaging , I try healing ; whatever ; but mostly I’m coping with it. Maybe like being a diabetic I will be a depressed person ; but that’s fine"

hi Manu, thanks for sharing. would you like to give examples of how you cope? this may be helpful to others who are working on recovery as well.

When she reached the 3rd stage, she got even a better job and even though we were done with the therapy process, she n her whole family came to my office to thank me. I got a nice present from her. She and her husband told me that she got her life back and feels totally normal again.

Hi Karita, thanks for sharing - this is great! Glad to know that progression through the resilience process is possible, even for those of us struggling at Stage 1.

Since I am not a peer suffering from any mental health issues, I will share a case I handled as a hypnotherapist and counselor. A lady. Bipolar diagnoses. Came to see me when she was totally down n depressed. She didn’t eat hardly anything. Was very slim. She couldn’t work. Everything was spinning around her illness. I helped her to control her moods so she jumped to the second stage. Feeling better. To be continued...

What is the greatest factor that help you to break into Stage 3??? I feel I am hovering between stage 2 and 3....most of the time nearer to 3. Sometimes the feeling of so near yet so far can be quite frustrating.

congrats Jennie! I have the same question as Nicholas - how did you do it? do share so the rest of us can learn from your experiences.

I think I'm in stage 1. None of my friends know I have this problem except you (Jacqueline). Lol. I don't have a social support network.

I think I am in stage 3. As I am still working the same job for the last 10 years.

I would say I at Stage 1.5 - in between Stage 1 & Stage 2. The Illness is still a big part of me, but I want to make it smaller. To go to Stage 2, I will start exercising more regularly [currently I try to jog on the spot at home around 45 mins every 2-3 days]

Eddy, if possible, try to do this outdoor. The sunlight/sky/clouds/wind/trees/people etc. helps us to relax too.

    Eddy John Sng(24 Jul, 2018)

hi Nicholas, thanks for the suggestion. I used to jog outdoors but the weight gain puts too much strain on my knees and ankles, so I have to jog indoors for now. I will go out for walks sometimes in the evening though

    Nicholas Wong(24 Jul, 2018)

Weight gain...ahh...me too :p Walk outdoor will do too. I am doing this in the morning before I start my work. It really helps alot. Hopefully I can resume jogging one day.

I am in between Stage 2 and 3, but most of the time is nearer towards 3. I have engaged a recovery coach to help me to reach (and stay at) Stage 3. :D

That's great Nicholas! I hope you will be able to use all the tools and techniques you learn from your recovery coach to not just stay in stage 3 but also completely recover from your illness! All the best to you!

Thanks for the well wishes. I hope so too. Keeping going and never give up!
